Competency-based questions in the new Chemistry University Entrance Exam and their usefulness as a teaching resource

The new university entrance exam (PAU) within the framework of the LOMLOE have incorporated competency-based exercises with the aim of assessing the degree of achievement of the specific competencies of the different subjects. This article provides a detailed analysis of the questions of this type posed in the regular examination session for the 2024-2025 academic year for the subject of Chemistry in the different university districts. Some of these questions can be useful teaching resources for teachers of this subject, facilitating the integration and assessment of the competencies proposed by the current legislative framework.

Ludocognitive Resonance in Educational Games for Teaching Physics and Chemistry

+ Abstract

In this article, the pedagogical potential of educational board games in the teaching of Physics and Chemistry is explored. The concept of ludocognitive resonance is introduced, referring to the highest degree of connection between the actions performed during the game and the intended learning outcomes, arguing that this connection enhances learning. Through the analysis of specific experiences, the advantages of designing games in which the various elements serve the learning objective are demonstrated. Finally, practical guidelines are proposed to achieve an effective integration between game design and the teaching of scientific content.

The Evolution of Chemistry Teaching in secondary education (1970-2025): A Perspective from Catalonia

In this article we analyze the most significant changes that have taken place in chemistry teaching from the 1970s to the present, reviewing experimental chemistry in the 1970s, research on alternative student conceptions and constructivism in the 1980s, curricular changes brought about by the reform of the education system in the 1990s, the emphasis on inquiry, modeling, and chemistry in context in the 2000s, and reflection on the conceptual structure of chemistry and progressive modeling in the 2010s and the first years of 2020s.

Retos en el currículum español de química de la enseñanza secundaria obligatoria y del bachillerato

Se realiza un análisis crítico del actual currículum español de química de la educación secundaria, referido en la normativa del Ministerio de Educación (ME) y de la Comunidad Valenciana (CV). En la ESO, el del ME está poco acotado y se encuentra escasamente organizado, con notables ausencias, a diferencia del de la CV, que encuentra fundamentación en la investigación en la enseñanza de la química. En el bachillerato, un número excesivo de especificaciones sobrecargan el del ME, siguiendo una tradición de rigidez curricular, que dificulta atender propuestas fundamentadas de hacerlo menos extenso y más comprensible y asequible para el alumnado.

Research in Basic Level Training Cycles: a motivational strategy in the study of sciences

Research projects’ development in the classroom plays a crucial role in motivating and
triggering significant learning processes among students at all educational levels. The
involvement of students in hands-on experiences gives them the opportunity to apply
theoretical concepts to real-world situations, thereby fostering a deeper understanding
of scientific knowledge. Their implementation within Basic Degree Formative Cycles
(CFGB) is of particular interest due to the qualities of students. The current paper de
scribes the project carried out by first year Hairdressing and Aesthetics students of a
Basic Level Training Cycle from CIFP Rodríguez Fabrés (Salamanca), in which the ef
fectiveness of a natural and sustainable solid shampoo was evaluated against that of a
commercial liquid shampoo to stimulate their interest in scientific studies.

Biotechnology and detergents in the teaching of Chemistry

+ Abstract

This article proposes doing the laundry as a teaching resource to introduce key concepts of chemistry and biotechnology in high school chemistry education. Biotechnology has transformed many aspects of our daily lives. A common household product, the laundry detergent, is chosen in order to analyze the chemical components of detergents, the catalytic action of enzymes, their increased effectiveness in stain removal and the environmental benefits of their use. Additionally, different teaching proposals and hands-on activities for classroom application are presented, fostering the connection between science and sustainability and promoting meaningful and contextualized learning from a green chemistry perspective.

Benzene: 200 years at the heart of Chemistry

2025 marks the 200th anniversary of Michael Faraday's discovery of the benzene molecule. Today, benzene is the raw material for a large number of organic compounds, including many pharmaceuticals, plastics, dyes and other materials. Its flat, resonant structure makes it special in the field of chemistry, so it is a good time to take a few minutes to review some aspects of this compound.
